In this 90-minute workshop, Thomas Hübl, Dr. Angel Acosta, and Lina Pasquale will explore the insights and tools put forth in Thomas’ new book: Healing Collective Trauma: A Process for Integrating Our Intergenerational and Cultural Wounds.

Wounding and trauma are passed through communities and from generation to generation. And as Spiritual teacher Thomas Hübl says, “What our ancestors turned away from is our job.” The work of integration is a process of turning towards that which needs to be healed; of bringing it into the light of consciousness to be transformed. This conversation will serve to ground us in a shared understanding of humanity’s collective traumas: the ways trauma can shape our identities and affect our health, as well as influence economics, politics and our relationship with nature. It will also serve as an introduction to the Collective Trauma Integration Process, a group-based modality for evoking and eventually dissolving stuck traumatic energies.

Thomas will be joined in conversation and practice with Garrison Institute Fellowship Director Dr. Angel Acosta, who will ground this conversation in the societal challenges we face and the opportunities we have for collective healing at this moment in time.

Together with Garrison Institute’s Director of Contemplative-Based Resilience (CBR) Project, Lina Pasquale, they will examine how the CBR Project is addressing the need for healing collective trauma, by equipping front-line workers with tools to mitigate the effects of the vicarious trauma they experience on a day-to-day basis.

Through conversation and practice we will gain an awareness of the manifestations of collective trauma and identify paths to integration at both the micro- and macro- levels, thereby empowering us to heal interpersonally, intergenerationally and internationally.

Teachers: 

Thomas Hübl is a renowned teacher, author, and international facilitator whose lifelong work integrates the core insights of the great wisdom traditions and mysticism with the discoveries of science. Since the early 2000s, he has been facilitating large-scale events and courses that focus on the healing and integration of trauma, with a special focus on the shared history of Israelis and Germans. Over the last decade, he has facilitated dialogue with thousands of people around healing the collective traumas of racism, oppression, colonialism, genocides in the U.S., Israel, Germany, Spain, and Argentina. He is the author of the book Healing Collective Trauma: A Process for Integrating Our Intergenerational and Cultural Wounds. His non-profit organization, the Pocket Project, works to support the healing of collective trauma throughout the world.


For the last decade, Dr. Angel Acosta has worked to bridge the fields of leadership, social justice, and mindfulness. He holds a doctorate degree in curriculum and teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. Acosta has supported educational leaders and their students by facilitating leadership trainings, creating pathways to higher education, and designing dynamic learning experiences. His dissertation explored healing-centered education as a promising framework for educational leadership development.

After participating in the Mind and Life Institute’s Academy for Contemplative Leadership, Dr. Acosta began consulting and developing learning experiences that weave leadership development with conversations about inequality and healing, to support educational leaders through contemplative and restorative practices. As a former trustee for the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, he participated as a speaker and discussant at the Asia Pacific Forum on Holistic Education in Kyoto, Japan. He continues to consult for organizations like the NYC Department of Education, UNICEF, Columbia University and others. Over the last couple of years, he has designed the Contemplating 400 Years of Inequality Experience–a contemplative journey to understand structural inequality. He’s a proud member of the 400 Years of Inequality Project, based at the New School. He is currently the Director of the Garrison Institute’s Fellowship Program.

Lina Pasquale is the Director of the Contemplative-Based Resilience Project (CBR), one of Garrison Institute’s signature initiatives which addresses the psychosocial and embodied dimensions of resilience for society’s direct service workers and caretakers. The evidence-based CBR Project is grounded in scientific research on human resilience and incorporates tools such as breathing techniques, meditation, mindful movement, and an understanding of the psychology and physiology of stress. Anchored by the ABCs of Resilience – Awareness, Balance and Connection - CBR offers participants the chance to return to a more balanced place by cultivating contemplative tools for resilience, both personally and professionally.

Lina Pasquale is a mission-driven senior and executive leader with over two decades tenure in the social and human services sector, advancing traumatic stress theory into practice across multiple service industries. She has worked with non-profits and government agencies utilizing a strengths-based and resiliency-centered approach to promote well-being, health and social-emotional learning for direct service clients and staff within these organizations. In 2014, Ms. Pasquale was awarded the opportunity to participate in the Morgan Stanley Strategy Challenge, resulting in the development of the Center for Trauma-Informed Practice. A faculty member of the Sanctuary Institute of Trauma-Informed Care since its inception, she has provided expertise and consultation to multiple organizations and their leadership teams and held positions as a researcher and training specialist for Columbia University and Fordham University. Lina Pasquale holds two graduate degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University and The New School for Social Research.
