An Artful Earth Day Dinner and Talk

An Artful Earth Day Dinner and Talk

On April 19, 2018, the Ninth Annual Earth Day Dinner at the Garrison Institute will feature Storm King Art Center curator Nora Lawrence, co-curator of Indicators: Artists on Climate Change. She will bring us her insights, and in particular, a preview of the sight specific works from Storm King Art Center opening May 19, 2018.
“Our Annual Earth Day dinner is an opportunity to explore a particular aspect of our relationship with nature through a short talk and a meal,” explains Shelley Boris, executive chef of Fresh Company, who prepares the meal and operates the foodservice program at the Garrison Institute and at Storm King Art Center. This year we are excited to be featuring Nora Lawrence from the nationally recognized Storm King Art Center. The Hudson Valley is filled with people very connected to New York City in vibrant ways often through the arts. We think of the city as the hub which in many ways it is, but, since the 1960’s Storm King has lead the Hudson Valley as an arts destination. And these days from New York City to Hudson and beyond the Valley is home to so many museums as well as artists. This year’s theme, “Artists on Climate Change” in which the artists participating in the special exhibit were asked to reflect on climate change, provided a perfect connection to the open-minded way Fresh Company and The Garrison Institute use Earth Day to bring together our community to celebrate, and contemplate.

This year after Nora Lawrence’s talk, everyone will enjoy a fun & delicious Art & Craft supper.

Fresh Company is proud to run the food service at Storm King Art Center where we feature our craft-y tacos at a food truck located near the north parking lot. At the Earth Day Dinner we will honor the craft food makers of our region by showcasing their delicious fare while offering a taste of our food truck at the Garrison Institute. Nora Lawrence our guest speaker is a vegetarian and as our default menu at the Garrison Institute is also vegetarian we will serve a meal that is heavy on the veggies. We will also serve some modest amounts of superb local meat and ECO Shrimp (amazingly grown in Newburgh, NY!) with ample parts cheese and cream and sauces galore!

We are proudly featuring the talented, artful, independent, international, craft food growers and producers of New York State with amazing ingredients including: cheese, cream, cellar produce, pork, beans, tortillas, shrimp, ice cream, beer, cider, wine, coffee, milk, maple syrup, wheat, eggs, and more.

This year’s event follows a wide range of talks and meals. Past dinners have examined subjects such as urban sustainability, GMO’s, clean water access, organic farming, and the very nature of nature. The dinner is served in the large, beautiful, wood-paneled dining room at the Garrison Institute. “I look forward to this event every year,” says Boris. “It’s an opportunity to sit with our neighbors, to listen to a topical talk and share a good meal. It’s about fostering community and increasing our consciousness.”
